Need Help, Tranny

I currently have a 83 camaro z28 i swaped out my old 305 and put a 373 in, im all ready to go and attempted putting my tranny on but its just not slidding into possition...? it goes almost all the way in but half a inch sticks out.. i measured and my splines and everythign are the right size.. little help, ne tricks or tips plz
