Default "Service engine soon" light....

We just purchased a beautiful 1989 Camaro RS, 8 cyl, 5 speed, with the total iroc package.
Car seems to be cold blooded but runs fairly well once warmed up.
One of the problems we are having is every so often while driving, the "service engine soon" light comes on and when this happens the car begins to run very rough. Slow take offs, and sluggish. If I turn the car off say at a light, even for 5 seconds and restart it, the light is then off and the car is back to running fine again until the light goes on again.
Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what may be causing this?
Thanks much in advance!
Kevin

Well, since no one seems to be able to help me with this problem, maybe you can help if I add this to my post:
Today I used an actron gm scanner, and it gave me a code 43. I looked it up and it said ESC- Electronic Spark control system and that it could be any of the following:
Faulty or loose wiring and/or connections to ECM terminal L.

Faulty or loose wiring and/or connections from the ESC controller to the ECM.

Faulty or loose wiring and/or connections from the knock sensor to ESC controller.

Voltage at ECM A-B connector terminal B7 should be over 6 volts unless the system is sensing detonation.

Faulty ESC sensor and/or module.

Can anyone please tell me where to find this on my 1989 Camaro?
Should I just replace it or take it in to have it checked out completely?
Apx. how much is this unit, and apx. how much would it cost to have it replaced at a shop?
Thanks much in advance!
Kevin
