overheating

help me i have a 1996 ss and my car is running crazy hot . the coolant is fine but i haven't checked the thermostat yet. just today i started it up for no more than 3 minuntes and the engine was so hot i could barely touch it. i'm not sure what's goin on with it please help any suggestions thanks.
