Default fuel pump

my camaro has crapped out. seems im not getting fuel, or im getting it every now and then. i was told the fuel pump sending unit was bad, but the pump was good. ive taken the pump and sending unit out, and now i have to find a way to avoid spending the 300 bucks for an oem sending unit. im wondering if i can just hook up an electric pump inline and run it to a toggle like i used to on my carbuerated cars. if i do will anything have to be bypassed? does the harness that is originally there have to have anything done to it other than simply being disconnected? i can get a good flowing inline pump pretty cheap and avoid having to cut off my new exhaust and stuff to drop the tank, and it seems id save myself alot of time and busted knuckles. any suggestions? come on guys tell me something, its nice outside and i want to drive this thing before winter...thanks
